Southern Methodist University, or SMU for short, is a private, coeducational university in University Park, which is a city in Dallas County, in the US state of Texas, with a population estimated at a number of more than 23 000, during the 2000 census. It is partially surrounded by the municipality of Dallas and it is one of the Park Cities (along with Highland Park), an enclave of Dallas.
SMU was founded in 1911, by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, the university opening its doors to students 4 years later. Since then, SMU has constantly grown, having today an enrollment of approximately 11 000 students, of which about 6000 are undergraduates, offering various educational programs in numerous fields of study, through seven degree-granting schools, among which there are: the Cox School of Business, Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, Dedman School of Law and Lyle School of Engineering.
Southern Methodist University has been highly ranked, by numerous significant publications, over the years, for many of its educational programs, including by the U.S. News & World Report, which ranked it 68th among "National Universities" in its 2010 edition, The Cox School of Business being placed among the nation's top schools by BusinessWeek, Financial Times, and Forbes, The Dedman School of Law also being highly ranked and placed among the nation's top schools by U.S. News & World Report.
SMU's athletic teams are known as the SMU Mustangs, who compete in the NCAA's Division I (I-A for football) as members of Conference USA (C-USA), in various men's and women's sports, including in football, basketball and soccer, in which the teams have experinced most of their notable achievements. The university copetes annually with Rice University in football for the "Mayor's Cup", a traveling trophy that has been created to enhance the Rice-SMU rivalry which has been kept ''alive'' since 1916. Their distinctive colors are "Harvard Crimson" and "Yale Blue".
